My combined axonometrics evolving in UT2004

Outside element: this section is for the client "Jane Goodall". The concept behind this section so far is that it is meant to portray Jane Goodall's notion that apes are like people and so should be treated as such. Of course I have taken this notion and put a twist on it. I have reinterpreted it so as to represent how we all have needs and in an apes point of view the need would be for room to move and have an environment in which he/she would be able to climb and explore from all point s of view. This is keeping in mind Jane's idea that both apes and human should be treated equal - because it is just like they say in the Internet adds on tv "if we didn't seek, we wouldn't find" (hence the notion of human exploration and the link of ape exploration is shown).

Inside element: this section is for the client "Florence Nigthingale". The concept behind this section so far is that it is meant to portray a key section from a quote by her which reads "actions which bring results". The way in which this concept is being captured into this piece of architecture is that I have utilised the space in order to form a union between cleanliness and pure obsessiveness. The inside space is designed so that the results from the observer walking around the space will be purely depended on how much exploration they do and to what level of exploration is undertaken will depend on how much they become linked into with the space. This is also being emphasised through the use of very minimalistic and dark but rich lighting, this making the space not become visible to the viewer at first glance.

Meeting space (on the wall): this section was based around the idea that a union is to be made between the two in order to preserve an independent reality. My meeting space (which is still undergoing further development) is based on the concept put forward by Carl Gustav Jung, this being that " The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed".
And remember just like mentioned in the famous words of the spice girls a meeting place is an area " WHEN TWO BECOME ONE."

Quotes From New Clients

Jane Goodall:

“Surely we should treat them with the same consideration and kindness as we show to other humans; and as we recognize human rights, so should we recognize the rights of the great apes”

Quoted From - "Surfer Sam Magazine" issue 2003

Florence Nigthingale:

“I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results.”

Quoted From - ThinkExist.com Quotations

Stephen Hawking:

"To understand the Universe we must start from the here and now."

3 storyboard ideas

Description of each level - Answers to questions you may have

Above Level - The reason why i have designed the above level in such an unsual style is that it was relating to the word "Shallow" and as seen in the studio design the actual space is quite small and doesn't have a great deal of depth applied to it. This was sort of taking it literally but the contradiction to this notion of shallow was shown in the supports that protruded from it. These supports parodied the notion of shallow by creating another dimension and in fact expanding the field to make it have quite a deep dept.

Between Level (Gallery) - The gallery is an interesting space when viewed and talked about. Firstly the gallery isn't literally located on the floor level - this was the interesting concept of the building as the supports in which the gallery is seated on are on the ground and the glass sphere (which encases the gallery) is situated on them, which in turns connects it to the floor level - but is still technically on the ground. This idea of connecting materiality with nature is eveident in this space as the concept of the octopus' tenticals is shown in the circualr supports around the building. This portraying the idea of nature connecting with structure.

Below Level - The reason why I have designed this building in this way is that i wanted to display the word "protein", which related to this level. I created this connection through the dimensions of rooms to passage ways. the rooms were large and the passage ways were small and sunken into the bottom of the rooms structure. This was to represent a DNA or Protein lattice (hence the refernce to her artwork.) Also, the texture used inside the below studio assisted in a link to the word protein as it demonstrated a complex and confusing ideal, and to most people that is what protein is to them - a complex and confusing ideal. Another very interestering aspect that i tried to capture in this level was the sense of growth and repair - which is what protein would encode for. To show this i have put windows undergound. This allows the people within the building to gaze out into the dirt and the properties below ground to see the functions of a growing environment.

Well I hope my explanations of what I ws trying to portray throughout my Building and its individual levels is now clear.

Influential Aspects

Throughout the creation of my piece of architecture there have been many things in which I have found to have a great influence. From things such as magazine images through to the vast collection of artworks by the artist Rembrandt.
As seen above in the artwork entitled "Philosopher in Meditation" painted byRembrandt van Rijn, 1632.
They have had an influential impact of the creation of my architecture as I have tried to capture the emitting sensation in which is portrayed throughout his artworks' environments. The artworks by Rembrandt have also been influential as I have used his sense of colour arrangement and sense of light and dark in the development of my textures. This can be seen as by using his artworks as a reference I am able to apply my textures to my building and in doing so, try to create an essence of persecptive throughout the building. (hence layers - above and below)

Below is a quote by Grace McGarvie:
"An architect is the drawer of dreams" - this is true for me as I tried to make my dream of the perfect building in my mind reality. (plus i just like this quote as it shows that nothing is impossible and that architects are here to break the norms or reality.)

Both Pincinini and Swallow were influential as well (mainly cause it was built for them) but also because the building uses aspects of their working process as it aims to draw a link between animals, nature, science, materiality and technology.

Parragraph about artist - Swallow

Ricky Swallows works (including iMan) are clear examples of parodies to towards the common thoughts and reactions to modern soceity. The materials that have been used in the contruction of this artwork are injected-molded resin with colour tint. The production methods used in examples such as "iMan", are that the artwork is created in order to become a reflection on modern society and the contemporary thoughts and social issues of the time.

Parragraph about artist - Piccinini

During the 1990s technology and biology seemed to become ever more tightly entwined. Many artists reponded, and continue to respond, to this nexus of the born and the made. Patricia Piccinini's 1997 Protein Lattice series used the ear-mouse to reflect on humanity, materiality and ethics in the face of modern science. In the artwork by Patricia Piccinini entitled "Protein lattice" the materials used are media art. This is the artistic practice of using technology to manipulate and combine images and issues together in order to create a dimension of thought. It challenges the boundaries that we construct to establish our separation from the "outside" world, and maintain our identity. The production methods used in such artworks as "Protein Lattice" are getting a kind of inverted form and then manipulating and exploting taht image and issue in order to challenge our immediate response and trigger a reflection.

The term "too close for comfort" a a very relavent term that could be used to describe Patrica Piccininis' work. Her majoe works challenge our classification of life through the process of displaying the relationship and differences between the organic, natural and our man-made material world.
